Sharp Images & Filters

A word about filters. There is disagreement about the benefit of filters. There are photographers that leave a Skylight or UV (ultra-violet) filter on all the time reasoning that the filter protects their lens. I believe that filters should only be used when it offers a specific benefit for a specific shot. The exposure you have (no pun intended) of leaving them on all the time is that you have introduced a component that will affect the sharpness of your image, and not necessarily for the better! When you install that filter and can’t see its benefit, remove it. All filters degrade the image quality somewhat depending on the quality of the filter. “UV Filters don’t affect my images and there’s no light loss” you say; well, go ahead and leave it on. I am not opposed to filters per se. You buy good lenses costing hundreds, perhaps thousands of dollars to get good sharp images and then install a $15.00 filter. Perhaps I exaggerate but you get the point. Filters are designed for specific applications.
