Sharp Images & Tripods

The tripod is a must. A beanbag can be used but it is often a substitute for a tripod when space is critical (as when shooting at ground level or from your car window). You have all heard it, “stiff” and “heavy”. Ideally, it should be tall enough so that you can look through your camera view finder without stooping and without raising the center post on the tripod. If you purchase a “heavy” tripod, a few trips into the outback without a Sherpa just might discourage you from taking it along and there you are! If your tripod is on the “light” side, and you have a center post, you can drill a hole into the bottom of that center post and use it to insert a hook attached to a bag to suspend a weight (rocks found near by) to do the job. Also, consider the Carbon Fiber Tripods which are stiff and lighter. And lastly, don’t undo all of the other precautions that you’ve taken and defeat the benefit of the tripod by depressing the shutter release button with your finger. Use a cable release to trip the shutter.

Susanna MacKenzie EustonAfter many years shooting 35mm & large format black and white, Susanna became intrigued with digital technology several years ago. She now shoots Canon SLR digital equipment and is delighted with the way in which the technology has advanced to produce high resolution photographs. Deb Garland has a love for the outdoors and wants to share the natural beauty that we live in with all. She has been photographing for 15 years. During her career Deb has been published in several magazines, newspapers and calendars. She has had the opportunity to work with and train under such greats as Carl Moser, Hugh Morton, David Middleton, and Adam Jones. Thanks to these dedicated souls, she has become a professional in her own right. So many times people get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the world in which we live. Often the one closest to us is neglected. Sunsets, rain, and the simple pleasures of life go unnoticed. Debs' goal is to share the natural beauty all around us. Nestled in the Appalachian mountains Deb has her Photo Expressions business in the quaint town of Waynesville. Bill Lea—Photographing the wonder of wildlife, wildflowers, landscapes, and a variety of other natural subjects from the Canadian Rockies to the Florida Everglades has long been a passion for Bill Lea.  However, he may be best known for his portrayal of whitetail deer, black bears, and the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee.  Having resided in the Smoky Mountain area for more than twenty years has afforded this photographer limitless opportunities to observe and record the flora, fauna, and scenery of the region.  Bill's craft reflects his deep appreciation for nature.  He also communicates his enthusiasm and expertise as a natural history photographer to others through his photo workshops, feature articles, and civic presentations.  In addition, more than 5,000 of his images have appeared in an array of books, brochures, calendars, magazines, and other publications.   The enjoyment of sharing the wonder of nature with people is second only to Bill's desire for promoting a respect for all wildlife and the natural world. If you would like to see more of Bill's photography please visit his website at http://www.BillLea.com.

Mike Niles—I have always enjoyed photography and have just recently
decided to take it more seriously. I used a Pentax 35mm for many years but have
switched to a Canon digital and love it. I enjoy most types of photography but
nature is by far my favorite.
