FLASH

Thistle, no flash

If our subject is under-lighted, we know to add light. If our subject has too much light, a remedy may be to add more light, depending on the kind of light and your desired effect. We can attack those distracting shadows on our subject, caused by full sun, by providing “fill-in” light. We want to balance the ambient light with fill-flash, minimize dark areas and highlight areas of interest.

Thistle, with flash

Start with a reading of the ambient light; adjust the output of your dedicated TTL flash to -1 1/3 to -1 2/3 EV. Doing this will provide a more natural looking image and put that all important catch-light in the eye of your subject. Attachments such as light-boxes or diffusers will require you to be closer to your subject. When you can’t get close, you’ll need an extender to increase the effective range of your flash.
